START has been working on a large TNR (trap, neuter and return) project in Little Falls since September, where there are dozens of cats; adults, juniors and kittens which all need to be altered to help reduce the population. Though all these cats need our help, we have come across a special little girl “LuLu” that needs everyone’s help if she is to walk again.
LuLu's story began in October when she was altered and released along with her siblings to her monitored colony. Over the weeks, LuLu became interested in her human caretakers; she waited patiently everyday for her breakfast and dinner. Watching and examining the routine, LuLu ventured closer every day. LuLu began to come to a whistle and followed her favorite caretaker LuAnn while she feeds and cares for the colony. This past week her caretaker whistled and LuLu came limping for her meal and lacked her usual energy and enthusiasm. Worried the caretaker watched LuLu with concern, not sure what she could do since LuLu did not allow anyone to approach her. The next day LuLu did not respond to the morning whistle call, extremely worried as Lulu never missed a day, her caretaker quickly searched the area. LuLu was found trying to get to her daily meal, dragging her leg, unable to walk. Without hesitation Lulu's caretaker picked her up and tucked her under her coat, even though LuLu had never been handled before she relaxed in the arms of her rescuer so thankful to be safe. The calm that came over LuLu has turned into a constant purrr, she loves any attention!!
LuLu was taken to the Little Falls Animal Hospital, after an x-ray it was determined that LuLu would need immediate surgery, if she was to walk again. She had broken her heel and the Achilles tendon had separated from the bone, surgery would need to be done by a specialist. Because of the urgency to save LuLu's legs, she was taken to Oradell Animal Hospital and emergency surgery was performed. Special plates and pins were used to fix the break. A puncture wound was also found through her paw, that wound will heal on its own with antibiotics. LuLu is doing well and recuperating with her caretaker and trying to get comfortable with her cast, which she will have to be changed weekly for the next 6 weeks.
The estimate for her specialized surgery, recovery exams and care will be expensive; any donation to LuLu’s care and recovery will be appreciated, mostly by LuLu and by all her rescuers.
